ROME, Feb 11, 2008 (AFP) - An Italian F-16 fighter jet crashed in the sea late Monday off the coast of Sicily, and a search is underway for the pilot ANSA reported, citing port officials.

The aircraft plunged into the Mediterranean around 16 miles (30 kilometres) west of Sicily near the island of Levanzo, officials from the Sicilian port of Trapani said.
