MADRID, March 20, 2008 (AFP) - Police in central Spain dug up 11 kilos (24 pounds) of explosives and bomb-making equipment thought to be an old cache left by militant Basque separatist group ETA, the interior ministry said Thursday.

Officers with the civil guard found the explosives late Wednesday near marshland in the Cuidad Real region, said a ministry statement.

The explosives were in two separate plastic containers fitted with detonators. In two other plastic bags bearing ETA's logo, were two timers, detonators and batteries, the ministry said.

Further investigations suggest that the explosives were old 'with signs of deterioration' said the ministry.

Recently re-elected Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said last Saturday that the struggle against armed Basque separatist group ETA would be one of his government's priorities.
