UNITED NATIONS, April 1, 2008 (AFP) - UN boss Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday expressed deep concern about reports of continued rebel movements across the Chad-Sudan border and the risk of insurgent strikes on Chadian territory.

'The secretary-general is deeply concerned by reports of continued movement of rebel groups across the Chadian/Sudanese border and by the possibility that these groups may launch attacks on Chadian territory,' Ban's office said in a statement.

Earlier Tuesday the Sudanese military denied Chadian accusations that Khartoum was behind fighting between rebel and government forces and said it was adhering to the peace deal signed by the two neighbours in Senegal on March 13.

The clashes erupted in eastern Chad, which borders Sudan's Darfur region, nearly two months after a failed bid to oust President Idriss Deby Itno.

Chad's defense ministry charged that Sudan had ordered the rebel attack violating the latest peace agreement signed in Dakar.

Ban urged the Sudanese and Chadian governments 'to uphold their commitments under the Dakar accord and to make every effort to ensure that rebel groups do not use their territory as a staging ground for incursions.'

And he reminded the parties that the United Nations stands ready to do everything within its capacity to assist them in stabilizing the border region.
