GENEVA, June 4, 2008 (AFP) - Twenty Swiss parliamentarians have written to Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao urging him to accept an Amnesty International petition over human rights violations, the rights watchdog said Tuesday.
Amnesty had brought cartons containing 25,176 signatures to the Chinese embassy in Bern on April 29, but the doors were closed.
The cantonal police had suggested that Amnesty International leave the boxes with the Federal Security Service.
A few days ago, Amnesty received the boxes returned unopened, it said in a statement.
The letter, addressed to Wen, voiced disappointment at the 'non-responsiveness' of the Chinese side, saying it ran counter to China's bid to show itself 'open and progressive' by hosting the Olympic Games.
Amnesty International's campaign coordinator Christine Heller expressed the group's disappointment at the Chinese embassy's 'refusal of dialogue'.
'Through this petition, Amnesty International wants to remind the Chinese authorities that China had promised when the Olympic Games was attributed, to improve its human rights,' she said.
