EUGENE, July 1, 2008 (AFP) - USA Track and Field (USATF) has settled differences with the US Olympic Committee, hopes to have a new top executive by the end of the year and has talked with the IAAF about hosting world events.

USATF president Bill Roe, acting chief executive since Craig Masback left the job in February, said Tuesday on a US Olympic Track and Field Trials rest day that IAAF president Lamine Diack wants a US-hosted World Championships.

'Lamine Diack said that before he retires in 2011, he would like to know there is going to be a world indoors or world outdoors run in the United States,' Roe said.

'He would like to place the world outdoors here. We don't have a suitable facility for that,' Roe said. 'It's a very expensive proposition. It's going to be a long road. We will know by 2011 whether or not we can pull it off.'

A more realistic goal will be to apply by September for a 2010 or 2011 world cross country championship, but one thing USATF will have done by the end of the year is a restructuring that drastically trims its board of directors.

US Olympic Committee (USOC) president Jim Scherr had threatened disciplinary action and possible decertification of the USATF as an athletics governing body if the reduction was not completed sooner than USATF's 2009 or 2010 timetable.

'We wanted to take a little more time than they were comfortable with,' Roe said. 'We have satisfied their demands and are on progress to have a new board in place by December' at USATF's annual meeting in Reno, Nevada.

'That's what our common goal was. The only difference has been the timetable,' Roe said. 'Any organization that doesn't examine itself regularly is doomed to failure.'

Senegal's Diack, a weekend visitor at the US selection meet for next month's Beijing Olympics, was not unhappy that USATF has been without a top executive so long.

'I don't think it's an issue even at the IAAF level,' Roe said. 'I'm hopeful we have a new CEO on duty in December. I would like to be in the job as few days as possible.'

Adam Nelson, a two-time Olympic shot put runner-up who has booked his trip to Beijing, is on the selection panel that is not comprised of USATF board members.

'We're still moving forward very quickly,' Roe said. 'Rather than do it fast, we're going to do it right.'

Roe said Spokane, Washington, and Boulder, Colorado, are well along in bids for the 2010 or 2011 world cross country meet but there has been interest from New York, San Diego, Orlando, 2016 Olympic candidate Chicago and Washington.

'We love the idea of having the world cross country on the National Mall in Washington,' Roe said.

The price tag for a world cross country meet would be about three million dollars versus 20 million for a world indoors and much more for the world outdoor meet hosted last year in Osaka.
