AMMAN, August 3, 2008 (AFP) - Jordan's military court on Sunday jailed two football fans of Palestinian origin for burning the kingdom's flag while celebrating their team's April victory in the country's premier league.
The pair, who were not named, were each sentenced to one year in jail and ordered to pay a 100-dinar fine (around 140 dollars), a judicial official said.
'The court charged them with inciting racism and treading on the national flag before burning it' in Amman's Wehdat Palestinian camp, home to more than 50,000 refugees, he told AFP.
They were celebrating the Al-Wehdat team's winning the premier league after drawing with Al-Feisali.
Al-Feisali has mainly Jordanian players unlike Al-Wehdat whose players are mostly Jordanians of Palestinian origin and seen as representative of more than 1.8 million Palestinian refugees living in the kingdom.
