HARARE, August 6, 2008 (AFP) - Several police officers have been questioned in connection with a weekend bomb blast at Harare's main police station which damaged offices but caused no casualties, a state daily reported.

Citing sources close to the investigations, The Herald newspaper said 'a number of uniformed policemen and detectives were questioned on suspicion that they might have been involved in the bombing.'

Police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena would not confirm the questioning of the police officers.

'We can't be talking about allegations and if we have any relevant information pertaining to the case we will let you know,' Bvudzijena was quoted as saying by The Herald.

He told AFP at the weekend one of two explosives 'planted' in the first floor which houses offices of the criminal investigation department was detonated on Saturday evening, damaging 13 offices and a communal kitchen.

The police complex is adjacent to one of the capital's busiest bus stations.

The explosion came hours before negotiators for the ruling and opposition parties resumed talks for a power-sharing government to end Zimbabwe's political crisis.

A spate of fire bombings occurred last year targetting police stations, with police blaming the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change party, which rejected the claims.
