WARSAW, August 6, 2008 (AFP) - The man charged with overseeing the building of Poland's football stadia in time for the Euro 2012 championships has resigned, according to the country's sports minister Miroslaw Drzewiecki on Wednesday.

Michal Borowski stepped down as head of NCS, a public body organising and building the national stadium, and was replaced by Rafal Kapler, the minister confirmed.

Last month, a UEFA delegation visited Poland and co-host Ukraine amid growing fears that the countries would not be ready in time for Europe's footballing gala in 2012.

UEFA gave the joint projects a tentative thumbs-up, despite the country's logistical and infrastructural difficulties.

Drzewiecki moved quickly on Wednesday to quell any fears that Borowski's resignation would hamper the progress of its building plans, saying he had already spoken with representatives at UEFA.

When finished the national stadium, which is estimated to cost 1.2 billion zlotys (355 million euros), will hold 55,000 spectators.
