NOUAKCHOTT, August 6, 2008 (AFP) - The international airport of Nouakchott was closed down Wednesday after troops overthrew Mauritania's president in a military coup, security sources said.

'The airport is closed, I think it will stay that way for a while until the new authorities get organised. The borders were not closed and national and international telephone communications were not cut,' said the source on condition of anonymity.
