NOUAKCHOTT, August 7, 2008 (AFP) - The international airport of Nouakchott, closed down Wednesday after troops overthrew Mauritania's president in a military coup, was reopened in the evening, a security source said.

While the airport was closed for most of the day after the ousting of president Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi, the country's land borders remained open.

No violence has been reported after the coup, which has been condemned by the whole of the international community. Abdallahi was Mauritania's first democratically elected president.
