BEIJING, August 10, 2008 (AFP) - Stephanie Rice of Australia broke the world record in the women's 400 metres individual medley in a time of four minutes 29.45 seconds at the Beijing Olympics on Sunday.

Rice beat the record of 4:31.12 held by American Katie Hoff since June 29 by 1.67 seconds.

The Australian now holds both medley world records.
