PARIS, August 11, 2008 (AFP) - French President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, will meet his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev in Moscow on Tuesday before going to Tbilisi to hold talks with Georgia's leader, his office announced late Monday.
Sarkozy will visit Russia 'to meet with Dmitry Medvedev, president of the Russian federation, and then go on to Georgia for talks with President Mikheil Saakashvili,' a statement said.
It said Sarkozy on Monday held two lengthy telephone conversations with Medvedev and had conferred with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi as well as German Chancellor Angela Merkel to try to end the fighting over the Georgian breakaway region of South Ossetia.
The announcement came as Western diplomats reached agreement on a draft resolution calling for an immediate truce in the conflict between Russia and Georgia which will be presented to the full UN Security Council.
