World champion Hoff was well off her personal best as she was shut out of the medals in race won by world record-setting Stephanie Rice (2:08.45).

Hoff swam anchor on the US team that ended up third (7:46.33) behind world record-setting Australia (7:44.31) and China (7:45.93).

FAILED TO REACH FINAL

Hoff, who came into the Games with the second-fastest time in the world this year behind Rebecca Adlington (gold, 400m freestyle) of Britain, posted the 11th-fastest time of the heats and failed to book a place in the Olympic final.

(Kristin Otto of East Germany is the only woman to win six swimming golds at one Games, capturing the 50m and 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke, 4x100m free and 4x100m medley relay in 1988.)
