PARIS, August 15, 2008 (AFP) - Russia's president has told his French counterpart that his country will sign a ceasefire accord with Georgia and scrupulously respect all agreements, including a troop withdrawal, officials said in Paris.
Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, 'spoke with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev,' Sarkozy's office said in a statement.
'He (Mevedev) confirmed that he was also going to sign the agreement and that Russia would scrupulously respect its commitments to the accord, notably the pullout of Russian forces,' the statement said.
Sarkozy earlier also 'spoke with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili after he signed the ceasefire agreement, formally confirming the agreement he gave Sarkozy on August 12 in Tbilisi,' the French presidency said.
Georgia earlier Friday signed the French-brokered ceasefire agreement seeking to end its conflict with Russia over the breakaway South Ossetia region, during a visit by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Tbilisi.
The telephone conversation was confirmed by the Kremlin in Moscow.
