JAKARTA, August 19, 2008 (AFP) - The resignation of President Pervez Musharraf is a chance for Pakistan to overcome its leadership crisis and focus on problems like the economy and Islamic extremism, Indonesia said Tuesday.
'We see this leadership crisis of the last few years and we view the resignation of Musharraf as part of the crisis,' Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda told reporters a day after Musharraf stepped down.
'We hope that with the resignation, the controversy surrounding the problem of leadership will be settled peacefully.
'We hope that Pakistan will be able to heal itself, restore peace in the country and reinstate economic growth to the previous seven percent, because their challenges are not small.'
Ex-general Musharraf resigned nine years after seizing power in a bloodless military coup, as parliament debated his impeachment reportedly over charges of gross misconduct and violation of the constitution.
