BUENOS AIRES, September 3, 2008 (AFP) - A strong earthquake jolted northwestern Argentina on Wednesday, the US National Geological Survey announced.

The 6.0-strength quake struck 172 kilometers (107 miles) northeast of Santiago del Estero, Argentina, the survey said.

It hit at a depth of 547 km (340 miles), the USGS added.
