SEOUL, September 11, 2008 (AFP) - South Korea pushed for a share of major Romanian construction projects at a summit between the countries' leaders Thursday, the Seoul presidential office said.
President Lee Myung-Bak and his visiting counterpart Traian Basescu agreed to deepen cooperation in Romania's planned expansion of social, energy and information technology infrastructure, it said in a statement.
'Specifically, Lee asked for Basescu's support for South Korean enterprises seeking to participate in Romania's atomic power plant and container port construction projects,' it said, adding that the Romanian leader welcomed Korean involvement.
Romania plans to build a second nuclear power station after 2020 to ensure its future energy independence, it was announced this year.
Basescu arrived Wednesday for a two-day state visit, his second trip to South Korea following one in October 2005.
South Korean companies are seeking to take part in Romania's expected construction of an Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) terminal to handle Middle East imports.
