DAKAR, Sept 30, 2008 (AFP) - A Senegalese man who had set himself on fire to demand rent he claimed the ruling PDS party owed him, died on Tuesday in Dakar, the APS press agency reported.
Keba Diop had doused himself with flammable liquid and set himself alight Monday morning outside President Abdoulaye Wade's palace, according to APS.
Since November 2007, Diop been asking for money he said had never been paid to him by the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) after it rented a room from him in Casamance, in southern Senegal.
The man threatened to commit suicide if the president did not meet with him.
The presidency said in a statement that Wade -- led by his own 'legendary generosity' and 'moved' by the man's protests -- had since June wanted to pay Diop 10 million CFA francs (more than 15,000 euros, 21,000 dollars).
The president's cabinet also faxed to the media apparent evidence that a transaction of this amount was made, as well as a receipt.
The head of Wade's cabinet, Babacar Gaye, said Diop had tried to commit suicide before.
This is not the first time someone has taken their protest against Senegal's president to extreme lengths.
In December 2007, a woman set herself on fire in front of Rome's city hall during Wade's visit to the Italian capital. She also died a few weeks later from her injuries.
