GENEVA, Oct 2, 2008 (AFP) - World Trade Organisation members should receive a revised negotiation text on industrial products by year-end, the new coordinator handling the talks, Swiss ambassador Luzius Wasescha said Thursday.
'I'll offer the menu and we'll see whether its vegetarian or gastronomy -- and then we start cooking unless it boils down,' he said.
Wasescha, who replaces Canadian ambassador Donald Stephenson as the coordinator for the so-called NAMA negotiations, added that he has lined up 60 bilateral consultations with WTO members in the next 10 days.
These discussions should lead to a revised draft text by year-end.
'The work is linked to the work done in agriculture,' he said, adding that he expected a text on farm issues by the end of the year too.
Ministers met in July in a bid to hammer out a global trade deal but talks collapsed over a special safeguard mechanism that would allow members to impose a special tariff on agricultural goods if imports surge or prices fall.
Since then, officials have been meeting in a bid to relaunch the process.
