ST. LOUIS, Missouri, Oct 2, 2008 (AFP) - Vice presidential hopefuls opened their only debate here Thursday with all eyes on Republican Sarah Palin to see how she will match up against veteran Democratic senator Joseph Biden.

Palin, the first term Alaska governor, walked onto the stage with Biden and as they shook hands, she said: 'Nice to meet you. Hey, can I call you Joe?'

The debate was opened by moderator Gwen Ifill, who said she had chosen the questions and had not shared them in advance with two candidates.
