LUXEMBOURG, Oct 6, 2008 (AFP) - Portugal will guarantee the savings of its people in the face of the financial crisis, Portuguese Finance Minister Fernando Teixera Dos Santos said Monday.

'I will defend the need' for each European nation 'to give such guarantees,' Dos Santos added.

'It is important that this guarantee is given to restore confidence in our financial systems.'
