MADRID, Oct 8, 2008 (AFP) - The Spanish branch of Amnesty International Wednesday urged the government to 'actively cooperate' with a judicial inquiry into CIA flights carrying terror suspects that allegedly stopped in Spain.

The human rights group estimates that around 90 flights that were CIA or CIA-linked made stops in Spain between 2002 and 2007 carrying suspects to or from the US 'war on terror' camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

It called on the government to 'actively cooperate and without delay with' a judicial investigation opened in 2006, said the head of Amnesty International Spain, Esteban Beltran.

The investigation 'is a major step, but it was only opened due to the (pressure) from civil society, and not by authorities,' he said.

The organisation alleges that around 200 prisoners arrived in Guantanamo after stopping in Spain or crossing Spanish air space on the so-called rendition flights.

In February 2007, Spain's Socialist government, in power since 2004, agreed to declassify all documents from the secret services demanded by the judge for the investigation.
