Athletics: Kenya's Cheruiyot takes Chicago Marathon men's title

CHICAGO, Oct 12, 2008 (AFP) - Evans Cheruiyot of Kenya won the Chicago Marathon men's title on Sunday in an unofficial time of two hours, six minutes and 25 seconds.

Cheruiyot grabbed the lead in the 25th mile and surged to the finish with David Mandago second in 2:07.37 and Timothy Cherigat third in 2:11.39 to complete a podium sweep for Kenya.

It was the sixth men's victory in a row by a Kenyan in the event.

Mandago and Cheruiyot battled together down most of the final miles, Mandago pulling away in the 23rd mile before Cheruiyot rallied late to set a personal best, surpassing his prior mark of 2:09:16. Cherigat also ran a lifetime best.
