Republican John McCain won in Georgia on Tuesday where polls had shown Democrat Barack Obama making a late charge in the deep Southern, conservative state, two TV networks said.
MSNBC and Fox News both projected that McCain had taken the state and its 15 electoral votes.
Georgia was solidly in the McCain camp until late in the White House race, narrowing dramatically in the final weeks of the campaign and put in play for Obama by a big get-out-the-vote effort.
President George W. Bush beat Democratic Senator John Kerry by eight points in 2004.
But McCain had only a four-point lead over Obama going into Tuesday`s voting.
