Fiji are upbeat about their chances of setting up a rugby league World Cup semi-finals clash with Australia, skipper Wes Naiqama said in an interview published Wednesday.
The Pacific islanders lead Pool 2 after their opening win over France and face Scotland later eyeing a last-four clash against the defending champions and hot favourites.
`Right now, our main focus is on Scotland,` Naiqama told the Daily Telegraph ahead of Wednesday night`s game in Gosford
`But we`ve spoken about going as far as playing Australia in the semis and there`s a real confidence among the players that we can do that.
`Because the boys in this team, they honestly believe they`re as good as anyone.`
The `Bati,` with an exciting backline of pacy National Rugby League stars, can clinch a play-off spot with victory over Scotland.
After their spectacular 42-6 victory over France on Saturday, Naiqama outlined to the players their potential path through the draw.
`I just explained what scoreline would win our pool, how we`d then play the winner of pool three and how after that we would probably meet Australia,` he told the newspaper.
`And the boys were so excited. It was all, `Us versus Australia? Really?`
`They were saying stuff like, `Yeah, Billy Slater will have to run at me,` and talking about Cameron Smith around the ruck. Honestly, nothing fazes them.`
Teammate and fellow NRL star Jarryd Hayne said the players were not resting on their laurels after the France win.
`We want to do well in this tournament and I think the Scotland game can really set us up,` Hayne said.
`We know that last game against France counts for nothing now. It`s gone. Forgotten.
`But we`ve got a good core of NRL players in this squad and the other guys are really feeding off that. You tell them to go somewhere on the field and they`re there. They know it`s in the best interests of the side.`
