German President Horst Kohler Wednesday congratulated Barack Obama on his victory in the US presidential election, saying he could count on Germany as a `trustworthy partner and long-time friend`.

`Germany and the United States are united by common values and convictions. That is the basis of our close collaboration,` said Kohler said in a statement.
