Spain`s Supreme court upheld Thursday a government decision to revoke the political asylum granted to a Tunisian man because of his alleged links to extremists in Sudan.
The court rejected the appeal by Ridha el Barouni, a former director of an Islamic cultural centre in the Mediterranean port of Valencia, of the decision taken in July 2005 by Spain`s cabinet to cancel his politcal asylum.
That decision was based on a report by the Spanish intelligence service CNI that concluded that he posed a danger to national security for having coordinated the training of Islamist extremists at Al-Qaeda camps in Sudan between 1992 and 1997.
In 2004 Spain suffered one of Europe`s deadliest attacks when bombs planted by Islamists, inspired by Al-Qaeda and angered by the country`s participation in the US-led invasion of Iraq, exploded on packed commuter trains in Madrid, killing 191 people.
