Polish police said Wednesday they had struck a blow against a gang trafficking guns and munitions to the Italian mafia after a large arms haul.

Polish and Italian officers had carried out a joint operation Sunday on a house near Milan in northern Italy which had been under surveillance, Poland`s national police force said in a statement.

They seized 13 machine guns, including Kalashnikovs and Uzis, a number of pistols and revolvers, thousands of munitions, as well as dynamite and several detonators.

`These weapons were smuggled from Poland and were due to be handed over to an Italian criminal organisation,` police said.

There were no details of any arrests.

Other operations related to the case are planned, police said, adding that they would not give further details for the moment.

Police spokesman Krzysztof Hajdas told AFP the arms haul had been put together by individuals tied to the `Mokotow` gang, one of Poland`s largest criminal organisations, which is named after a residential area of Warsaw.
