Some 5,000 Kosovars took to the streets on Wednesday amid mounting tensions about an agreed UN-Serbia plan to deploy a European mission in the disputed Balkan territory.

`UN Proposes War,` read one of the large white banners brandished by the demonstrators in downtown Pristina, reflecting Kosovo Albanians` anger about intentions to implement the plan within weeks.

With the agreement, `about one third of (Kosovo`s) territory will be... put under the control of Serbia,` said a statement of the 15 non-governmental groups that organised the demonstration.

`The goal of Serbia is partition, and this is reflected by the six points` of the plan, said one organiser, Igballe Rugova, referring to the contentious agreement between Belgrade and the United Nations about the EU mission, EULEX.

`We do not want to be an experiment any more. Kosovo is a sovereign state,` said Rugova of the Kosova Women`s Network, a non-governmental organisation.

Ethnic Albanian-majority Kosovo seceded from Serbia in February and 52 nations, including the United States and most of the 27-member EU bloc, have since recognised its independence.

Belgrade, which staunchly opposes Kosovo`s independence, was initially against the deployment of EULEX -- a 2,000-strong police, justice and customs mission.

But it agreed to the deployment after the United Nations and European Union accepted its demands as part of the six-point plan.

The plan includes agreements that the EU mission view Kosovo`s status as neutral, and that it be approved by the UN Security Council in accordance with a pre-existing resolution.

Kosovo`s leaders reject the plan despite the urgings of the United States, arguing it would breach the newly independent state`s constitution, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
