Cypriot President Demetris Christofias voiced support on Wednesday for Moscow`s plans for a new European security pact during talks with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev in Moscow.

`I welcome your initiative on modernising the security system of Europe. I am convinced that our European partners will eventually share the opinion of Cyprus,` Christofias said at the meeting in the Kremlin.

Medvedev proposed replacing existing Cold War-era arms treaties in Europe during a speech in Berlin in June and has called for a reform in European security following a brief Russia-Georgia war in August.

`Cyprus is a loyal friend of Russia,` Medvedev said, adding that Russia would support `a comprehensive and fair resolution` to the long-running territorial dispute between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.

Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders launched reunification talks in September.
