Sixty percent of Germans no longer feel any particular responsibility toward Israel, six decades after the Nazis tried to exterminate Jews, according to a poll released Wednesday.Among young people the proportion was even higher at 70 percent, the survey carried out by the Forsa institute and due for publication Thursday in Stern magazine showed.Thirty-five percent of those polled still felt Germany had a extraordinary duty as an ally to the Jewish state. But 13 percent of the 1,000 asked questioned Israel's right to exist.Forsa chief Manfred Guellner called it a "dangerous development" if young Germans felt that they had to draw a line under the past and no longer atone for Germany's Nazi past, Stern said.Carried out on January 8 -- 13 days into Israel's military offensive in Gaza -- the survey found that 30 percent think Hamas is mostly to blame for the current conflict, 13 percent Israel and 35 percent both sides.Forty-nine percent said Israel was an aggressive country, 59 percent believed it acted without regard to its neighbours and just 30 percent are convinced Israel's government cares about human rights.stu/dlc/ach
