World Vision, the US-based charity targeted in a gun and grenade attack in Pakistan, is an international Christian relief organization that works among the poor around the world.

Founded in 1950, the organization says it serves an estimated 100 million people in nearly 100 countries "by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice."

Although Christian in orientation and staff, World Vision says it works with children and families without regard to religion, race, ethnicity or gender.

"Motivated by our faith in Jesus Christ, we serve alongside the poor and oppressed as a demonstration of God’s unconditional love for all people," it says on its website.

It raised 2.6 billion dollars in 2008 and employs more than 30,000 staffers around the world, making it a behemoth in the world of international charities.
