An explosive device blasted off on a railroad in Russia's Caucasus region of Dagestan late Thursday, derailing several wagons of a cargo train, Russia's state railway agency said Friday.

"As a result of an explosive device planted on rails near Makhachkala, 14 wagons derailed" and two passenger trains "will be delayed, all passengers provided with water and hot food," the agency said in a statement published on its website.

No casualties were reported and repairs would be launched once investigators complete their work, the statement read.

Authorities are struggling to quash a Muslim insurgency in the country's volatile North Caucasus region, which includes Dagestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya and has seen a spike in violence in recent days.
