In an effort to implement the judgment of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the Cameroon-Nigeria boundary dispute, the recent tensions not withstanding. The leader of the Nigeria negotiation delegation, Prince Bola Ajibola, said Nigerian government has completed plans to hand over the Bakassi peninsula to Cameroon.
Prince Ajibola stated this during the 20th session of the Cameroon-Nigeria mixed commission in the quest for a lasting solution to the border problem between the two countries.
He said so far, the two countries have been able to achieve a reasonable degree of confidence, thus paving the way for meaningful dialogue and promoting peace between Nigeria and Cameroon.
Ajibola stated that the mixed commission had achieved a lot since its inception in 2002, stating that the transfer of authority and sovereignty in villages affected by the ICJ judgment in lake Chad area, raising some funds for the demarcation of the land boundary, exchange of data on the maritime boundary and the eventual delineation of that sector of the boundary.
He added that the withdrawal of the Nigerian military from Bakassi, as agreed by both parties, with the signing of the Green tree agreement and identifying pillar sites along some sectors of the land boundary was also what they had achieved so far.
