Following various petitions by residents of the Federal Capital Territory against the incessant arrest and detentions carried out by the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), the board has shut down its detention cell located at Area 3.
Residents had alleged that the board has abused the power given to them by the FCT Administration to arrest and detain residents caught littering the Federal Capital City.
True to the popular saying that 'power corrupts', the board, in abuse of the power vested on them, had recruited 'area boys' who go around the territory arresting people indiscriminately.
Several innocent residents have been arrested and only released by paying a certain amount of money to the board.
The residents have, however, cried to the FCTA through petitions and allegations against the activities of the board. The voice of the people they say, is the voice of God as the prayers of the residents have been answered through the recent development of shutting down of the detention cell.
