Kenyan slum children find healing in football club

NAIROBI, Feb 10, 2008 (AFP) - It is a hot, humid afternoon and the children of Nairobi's Mathare slum are once again playing football and trying to put behind the tribal violence that nearly tore them apart.

Like many other kids across Kenya, these children aged 12 to 18 were caught up in the turmoil that erupted after disputed presidential polls in late December.

Dropped following a 4-2 loss to Egypt in their first group match, Mbia made the most of his second chance to open the scoring in the first half and snatch the winner two minutes into extra time.

SEKONDI, Ghana, Feb 3, 2008 (AFP) - Ivory Coast overwhelmed Guinea in the closing stages to triumph 5-0 in an African Nations Cup quarter-final Sunday and equal the record winning margin for the tournament.

The 'Elephants' led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a Kader Keita goal and captain Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou (twice) and Bakary Kone were on target as Guinea fell apart.

KUMASI, Ghana, Feb 7, 2008 (AFP) - Defending champions Egypt took aim at a sixth African Nations Cup title on Thursday when they defeated Ivory Coast 4-1 in the semi-finals to set-up a final showdown on Sunday against Cameroon.

Cameroon, the four-time champions, earlier edged hosts Ghana 1-0 in the other semi-final in Accra.

ACCRA, Feb 5, 2008 (AFP) - Ghana striker Junior Agogo has received an unusual offer from an 82-year-old fan in appreciation of his exploits at the African Nations Cup semi-final - his granddaughter.

The proposal was made after the Nottingham Forest forward's late winner in the 2-1 success over Nigeria which put the hosts into Thursday's semi-final with Cameroon.

They are goalkeeper Essam al-Hadary, defender Wael Gomaa, and midfielders Mohamed Aboutraika and Hosny Abd Rabou and striker Amr Zaky, who scored four goals each in the biennial tournament.

Football: Record African Nations Cup goal haul as Ghana finish third

KUMASI, Ghana, Feb 9, 2008 (AFP) - The goals continued to flow at the 2008 African Nations Cup Saturday with a record created as hosts Ghana beat Ivory Coast 4-2 in the third place play-off.

A first-half equaliser by Ivorian striker Boubacar Sanogo was the 94th goal of the 2008 tournament - one more than the previous best set in Burkina Faso 10 years ago.
