Migrant criminal network operating in London: BBC

LONDON, July 16, 2008 (AFP) - A BBC investigation has exposed a criminal network in London that exploits hundreds of illegal immigrants from India through cheap housing, faked documents and poorly paid, often dangerous work.

The network operates in a west London neighbourhood, acquiring forged passports, driving licences and social security papers, the BBC said Wednesday.

Migrants live in every town in Ireland: official data

DUBLIN, June 30, 2008 (AFP) - There were 420,000 immigrants from 188 countries living in Ireland at the time of the last nationwide census, a major change in a country known for emigration, an analysis published Monday said.

'There were non-Irish nationals living in every town in Ireland,' the Central Statistics Officer (CSO) study of the 2006 census said.

Libya says 31,000 illegal immigrants sent home last year

TRIPOLI, June 4, 2008 (AFP) - Libya sent home 30,940 illegal immigrants last year at its own expense and is seeking one billion euros in aid to cope with the the flow of illegals, a senior official said on Wednesday.

'We calculate (we have) one million clandestine immigrants, which is some 20 percent of the total population,' said interior ministry Colonel Abdel Monem Ayad.

Irish immigrant body seeks tougher anti-racism laws

An immigrant support group in Ireland called Thursday for tougher anti-racism laws following research that highlights problems experienced by Chinese, Indians, Lithuanians and Nigerians.

'Some of the experiences recounted by migrants who took part in the research do not make for comfortable reading,' said Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI) chief executive Denise Charlton.
