Bollywood star Dutt could head to jail Monday: lawyer

MUMBAI, Oct 20, 2007 (AFP) - Bollywood bad boy Sanjay Dutt, who is out on bail from a six-year sentence for illegal arms possession due to a technicality, could be back in jail as early as Monday, his lawyer said.

India's Supreme Court agreed to his conditional release in August after the anti-terror court in Mumbai that jailed him failed to provide the actor with a copy of its judgement.

'Dutt has now been called on Monday and is likely to receive his copy,' Farhana Shah, one of Dutt's lawyers, told AFP Saturday.

Bollywood star says India can be world entertainment hub

NEW DELHI, Oct 13, 2007 (AFP) - Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan said on Saturday that India, with its rich cultural offerings, could become a global centre for entertainment.

'We have a nearly 100-year-old industry. We have a fantastic culture. We can be a global entertainment portal,' Khan told a gathering of politicians and top businessmen in New Delhi.

Man Utd tie up with potential Bollywood blockbuster

MUMBAI, Oct 9, 2007 (AFP) - Bollywood movie 'Goal' has tied up with Manchester United Football Club in the hope of scoring a major hit when it is released at the end of the month.

Indian hunk John Abraham plays the role of a footballer inspired by the English Premier League champions.

'It's great to be associated with the Manchester United Club for our film,' Abraham told Tuesday's The Times of India. 'I have been a die-hard soccer fan since childhood and I have been idolising Manchester United since then.'

Rai to play fabled Taj Mahal beauty

MUMBAI, Sept 27, 2007 (AFP) - Former Miss World Aishwarya Rai will play the role of Queen Mumtaz in a film on the Taj Mahal -- the white marble mausoleum built in memory of the fabled 16th-century beauty.

'I had spoken to Aishwarya last year while we were working on 'The Last Legion' and she very generously agreed to do the movie with me,' said British actor Ben Kingsley, who is co-producing the film.

Bollywood star Dutt likely to remain out on bail till next month

MUMBAI, Sept 26, 2007 (AFP) - Bollywood bad boy Sanjay Dutt could remain out of jail for another month on bail from his six-year sentence for arms possession due to a technicality, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Last month India's Supreme Court agreed to his conditional release after the anti-terror court in Mumbai that jailed him failed to provide the actor with a copy of its judgement.

'Dutt has still to receive the court order. We expect it to come only by mid-October,' Karan Singh, one of Dutt's lawyers, told AFP.

Indian prime minister turns 75 with a theatrical flourish

Sony Pictures to make Bollywood love story

MUMBAI, Sept 16, 2007 (AFP) - Hollywood studio Sony Pictures is ready for its maiden foray into India's money-spinning Bollywood movie industry with a love story due for release this year, a company official said here.

The film Saawariya (Beloved) -- which will still have Bollywood's trademark song-and-dance sequences -- will hit cinemas in November.

'Bollywood makes roughly 200-odd films every year. We believe there is reasonably good money to make here,' said Gareth Wigan, vice chairman of Columbia Tristar Motion Picture Group, a Sony Pictures Entertainment Company.

Bailed Bollywood star heads back to work

MUMBAI, Sept 10, 2007 (AFP) - Bollywood bad boy Sanjay Dutt Monday said he could resume work as early as this weekend after being temporarily bailed from his six-year jail term for arms possession.

'I will resume my movie shoots very soon, starting possibly this weekend to meet contractual commitments,' Dutt, sporting prison-cropped hair, told reporters.

'I have to grow my hair back and get into shape,' joked the burly actor, who has already spent three weeks behind bars.

Bollywood star free on bail in poaching case

JODHPUR, India, Aug 31, 2007 (AFP) - Top Bollywood actor Salman Khan was Friday released from prison on bail pending his appeal against a conviction for killing protected wildlife.

The 41-year-old actor, wearing a baseball cap and clad in a white shirt and jeans, was whisked away from prison in the northern Indian city of Jodhpur by his lawyers and friends, witnesses said.

He was jailed last week after a court kicked out an appeal by the actor against his conviction, under which he has to serve a five-year prison term.
