Israeli rights group calls for end to Gaza closure

An Israeli legal watchdog demanded on Wednesday that authorities end the closure of the Gaza Strip, claiming it violates international prohibitions against collective punishment.

`We demand the immediate reversal of all restrictions on the transfer of fuel, cooking gas and humanitarian products into the Gaza Strip,` Gisha said in a letter to the Israeli military.

Jordanians protest Israeli Gaza blockade

At least 1,000 people took to the streets of the Jordanian capital on Wednesday to protest Israel`s blockade of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

HRW urges independent probe into 'indiscriminate' Gaza killings

GAZA CITY, Nov 17, 2007 (AFP) - The New York-based Human Rights Watch group has called for the Hamas-run government in Gaza to set up an independent probe into shootings at a rally that killed eight people, calling the violence excessive and indiscriminate.

HRW in a statement on Friday welcomed a pledge by sacked Palestinian prime minister Ismail Haniya of the Islamist Hamas movement that it had ordered a 'strong and objective' inquiry into the circumstances of Monday's clashes.

Islamist rivals agree pact to end Gaza clashes

GAZA CITY, Oct 22, 2007 (AFP) - Palestinian Islamist movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad announced Monday that they had reached a deal to end deadly factional fighting that erupted in the Gaza Strip at the weekend.

In a joint statement, the rival groups said they had agreed to 'completely and immediately end all sources of tension, including withdrawing armed men and lifting checkpoints'.

They have also decided to appoint a joint commission to 'establish why the incidents happened and come up with a radical solution'.
