Polish exit polls delayed as voting continues

WARSAW, Oct 21, 2007 (AFP) - Poland's national electoral commission said it has imposed an embargo until 10:55 pm (2055 GMT) on the publication of any exit polls from Sunday's elections because voting was still underway in Warsaw.

Commission official Jan Kacprzak made the announcement after the body had already postponed its green light for issuing exit polls several times, after voting was delayed by technical problems in two polling stations and in others by a shortfall of ballot papers.

Indonesian military must take responsibility for 1999 violence: witness

DILI, Sept 26, 2007 (AFP) - An East Timorese who was a pro-Indonesia activist during the tiny nation's 1999 independence vote said Wednesday that Indonesia's military should be held responsible for violence occurring then.

Fransisco de Carvalho Lopes, who now holds Indonesian citizenship, was the only Indonesian to testify at the fifth and final round of hearings of the Indonesia-East Timor Commission of Truth and Friendship (CTF) here.

Other sessions have been held in Indonesia.

ETimor president shrugs off UN boycott threat

DENPASAR, Indonesia, Sept 21, 2007 (AFP) - East Timor's president on Friday brushed off a UN threat to boycott a commission charged with examining violence surrounding East Timor's 1999 independence vote, an official said.

President Jose Ramos-Horta met with members of the Indonesia-East Timor Commission of Truth and Friendship (CTF) in his capacity as head of state en route to New York to attend next week's UN general assembly.

US, Iraq agree on joint commission on Blackwater shooting

WASHINGTON, Sept 19, 2007 (AFP) - Iraq and the United States agreed to set up a joint commission to examine security of US government officials in Iraq following a deadly shooting involving private security firm Blackwater, the State Department said Wednesday.

'The commission's goal is to make joint policy recommendations, including specific suggestions for improving US and Iraqi procedures regarding government-affiliated personal security details,' department spokesman Tom Casey said.
