Turkey recalled its ambassador to Washington on October 11 in a diplomatic row over a vote in the US Congress to label the massacre of Armenians by the Ottoman Turks an act of genocide, Anatolia news agency reported.

Detained KRouge leader Nuon Chea taken to hospital

PHNOM PENH, Oct 20, 2007 (AFP) - Senior surviving Khmer Rouge leader Nuon Chea, who is in the custody of Cambodia's UN-backed genocide court on war crimes charges, was hospitalised for a heart check-up, his lawyer said Saturday.

Nuon Chea, 81, was examined by a French doctor Friday at Phnom Penh's French-funded Calmette hospital, his lawyer Son Arun said, adding Nuon Chea was expected to leave the hospital late Saturday.

Rwandan wanted for genocide arrested in France

LYON, France, Oct 18, 2007 (AFP) - A Rwandan wanted for his alleged role in the country's 1994 genocide has been arrested in France, Interpol announced Thursday.

Dominique Ntawukuriryayo, a former sub-prefect in Rwanda, had been on a list of people wanted by the international police agency since November 2006.

He was arrested by French police in Carcassonne in the southwest of France, although the exact date of his arrest was not released.

Support flagging for 'genocide' resolution

WASHINGTON, Oct 17, 2007 (AFP) - US Congressional support flagged Wednesday for a resolution calling the World War I massacre of Armenians by Ottoman Turks 'genocide' amid concern over Turkey's threat to cut off support for the Iraq war.

In apparent retreat from their initial stance, a group of Democrats in the House of Representatives, including the influential John Murtha, said they would 'very vigorously' oppose the measure cleared last week by a committee.

'If voted today it would not pass on the floor,' Murtha said.

Bush urges lawmakers to drop Armenian 'genocide' measure

WASHINGTON, Oct 17, 2007 (AFP) - Looking to defuse tensions with a key US ally, US President George W. Bush on Wednesday urged the Congress to drop a resolution calling the World War I massacre of Armenians in Turkey 'genocide.'

'One thing Congress should not be doing is sorting out the historical record of the Ottoman Empire,' Bush said at a press conference, branding the measure 'counterproductive.'
