China arrests 27 in tainted milk scandal: state media

BEIJING, Sept 30, 2008 (AFP) - Police in northern China have arrested 27 people in their probe into tainted milk that has sickened 53,000 children and embarrassed China's reputation abroad, state media reported Tuesday.

The 27 are among 36 detained since law enforcers in Hebei province started investigating Sanlu Group, the company at the centre of the scandal, earlier this month.

Spanish police seize six tonnes of hashish, arrest five

MADRID, Sept 30, 2008 (AFP) - Spanish police said Tuesday they had seized seven tonnes of hashish and arrested five suspects at two southern ports, the biggest such haul in the southern Andalusia region this year.

In the first operation, officers found one tonne of hashish divided into 36 packets on a boat in the port of Cadiz, on Spain's southern coast said a police statement.

Five arrested in France after tip-off on plot

PARIS, September 11, 2008 (AFP) - Police arrested five men in western France Thursday following a tip-off about a possible terror plot, a source close to the case said.

Police in Rennes detained the men, all French nationals of north African origin, 'to verify information on the possible creation of an Islamist grouping that may have had terrorist aims,' said the source.

Saudi arrests five web 'jihadis'
