A noisy rumble sparked panic at a school outside the Haitian capital Wednesday, killing one student and wounding dozens as jitters remained nearly two weeks after a deadly school collapse, authorities said.

`The accident occurred when a trailer passing by caused a panic. Schoolchildren then rushed towards the exit,` civil protection director Alta Jean-Baptiste told the AFP.

PARIS, Nov 17, 2007 (AFP) - Two firemen died in an overnight fire in Paris when the blazing multi-storey carpark they were fighting to put out collapsed on top of them, police said Saturday.

Matthieu Mercier, 23, was found dead on the scene and his body was removed from under three storeys of concrete debris on Saturday morning.

Ludovic Martin, 21, died in hospital of his injuries early on Saturday morning, despite nine hours of attempts to revive him.

Both were non-commissioned officers in the Paris fire brigade, which is a branch of the military.

Six dead in Algeria gas blast

ALGIERS, Nov 17, 2007 (AFP) - A gas explosion in an old house in eastern Algeria killed six people and injured another eight Saturday, emergency services said.

The blast levelled the two-storey building in an old quarter of Annaba, 600 kilometres (375 miles) east of Algiers, killing two women, one of them pregnant, a man and three children.

One of the eight injured was in serious condition, the emergency services added.

Seven killed in mining accident in Congo: official

GOMA, DR Congo, Nov 17, 2007 (AFP) - Seven people were killed and eight injured when a tunnel collapsed on illegal miners digging in workings in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a local official said Saturday.

Dieudonne Tshiku, administrator of the Walikale district, 90 kilometres (55 miles) north of the Nord-Kivu provincial capital of Goma, said local people had pulled the victims out after the collapse happened on Thursday.

He said an investigation had been launched into the accident at the workings operated by the Mining Processing Company.

Sixteen killed in China fireworks factory blast

BEIJING, Oct 22, 2007 (AFP) - At least 16 people were killed and 15 injured in a massive explosion at a fireworks factory in southwestern China that also levelled nearby houses, state media reported on Monday.

One person was also missing after the blast which occurred Sunday morning in a remote county of Chongqing municipality, Xinhua news agency said, citing local government sources.

The force of the blast levelled several houses nearby and casualties could rise further as rescuers search through the rubble, the report said.

30 still missing after Indonesian ferry disaster: official

JAKARTA, Oct 22, 2007 (AFP) - About 30 people are believed to be missing after an Indonesian ferry sank off Sulawesi island last week, killing at least 31 people, an official said Monday.

The boat capsized last Thursday when passengers rushed to the roof to pick up a mobile phone signal as it approached the coast, officials have said.

'After synchronising reports from various parties, we have concluded that 30 people are missing after the Acita 03 sank,' said an official at the disaster management centre in Bau Bau, where the boat was supposed to have docked.

At least 7 dead in abandoned Russian mine

MOSCOW, Oct 22, 2007 (AFP) - At least seven people were killed after going down in an abandoned mine in south Siberia, the Russian emergency situations ministry said Sunday, according to the Interfax news agency.

Local officials said 19 people on Friday went down into the mine which had been closed in 1996. Seven left the mine by themselves, three were hospitalised with injuries, one wasfound alive, while seven were found dead and one is still missing.

Ministry officials later said that up to 22 people could have gone down into the mine.

MEXICO CITY, Oct 21, 2007 (AFP) - Recovery efforts continued Sunday for nine victims believed to have drowned when a boat carrying Central American migrants capsized off Mexico's Pacific coast, officials said.

Mexico's navy rescued two survivors and recovered 15 bodies, but another nine passengers remain unaccounted for, officials said.

The mishap Friday came after heavy seas churned tropical storm Kiko, off the coast of southern Mexico.

Officials said the missing were illegal immigrants from Central America.

Four dead in Russian helicopter accident

MOSCOW, Oct 21, 2007 (AFP) - A US-built helicopter crashed in an isolated part of Siberia on Sunday killing four people, authorities were quoted as saying.

The wreckage of the helicopter was found by a forest guard in a wooded region about 400 kilometres (250 miles) south of the city of Kemerovo, news agencies quoted Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Viktor Beltsov as saying.

The bodies of the pilot and of three passengers were found nearby. None were immediately identified and an investigation was started into the cause of the accident.

Canada plane crash pilot was 82

VANCOUVER, Canada, Oct 21, 2007 (AFP) - A pilot who died when his light airplane crashed into a ninth-floor suburban apartment was an 82-year old man who had been flying since he was a teenager, police said Saturday.

The six-seater Piper Seneca aircraft ploughed right into the apartment in a densely populated residential suburb of Vancouver just after taking off on Friday, injuring two people inside.

Police said the pilot had more than 60 years of flying experience, having started when he was 18.

'On Friday morning, a boat carrying undocumented immigrants capsized in a zone known as the Dead Sea,' an official with the public ministry of San Francisco Ixhuatan in Oaxaca state told AFP.

'They were boats that usually pass the coast of Oaxaca with Central Americans,' he added. 'Local residents recovered 24 bodies.'

Twelve killed in Egypt road accident

CAIRO, Oct 20, 2007 (AFP) - Twelve people were killed south of Cairo on Saturday when their minibus was in collision with a truck on one of Egypt's most dangerous roads, a police official told AFP.

The minibus driver and 11 passengers on board were killed when they crashed head-on with the truck which was coming in the opposite direction, the official said.

Seven people were also injured in the crash.

The narrow Assyut desert road linking Cairo to southern Egypt is pitted with potholes and the scene of regular accidents.

Road crash kills 26 political activists in Malawi: police

BLANTYRE, Oct 20, 2007 (AFP) - Twenty-six political activists have been killed in central Malawi after a speeding truck carrying 62 people overturned, police and hospital authorities said Saturday.

'So far 26 people have been confirmed dead and 12 are critically injured,' police spokesman for Dedza district Frankiln Gausi told AFP.

Hospital authorities in Dedza also confirmed 26 deaths. A nurse at the district hospital said five people died on arrival at the hospital.

Small plane crashes into building in Canada

MONTREAL, Oct 19, 2007 (AFP) - A small plane crashed into a building Friday outside the Canadian Pacific coast city of Vancouver, local media reported.

The plane was circling above Richmond, a densely populated suburb of Vancouver, before plunging into a building, CBC television reported.

Several ambulances were at the scene of the crash, but no casualties were immediately reported.

The aircraft had taken off from Vancouver International Airport.

Malaysian man taken for wild boar, shot dead

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19, 2007 (AFP) - A Malaysian man was killed Friday when a relative mistook him for a wild boar and shot him with a pellet gun, the state news agency Bernama reported.

Ajun Imang Jau, 53, from a village in Sarawak state on Borneo island, was visiting relatives when he was invited on a hunting party by his wife's uncle, the report said.

The uncle later returned to inform the villagers that he had shot Ajun after mistaking him for a wild boar.

Two killed in Romania helicopter crash

BUCHAREST, Oct 19, 2007 (AFP) - Two people were killed after their helicopter crashed Friday in a forest in south-eastern Romania, authorities said.

The helicopter was on its way to the Black Sea resort of Mamaia when it crashed in a forest in Ialomita county and burst into flames.

The pilot and the passenger died in the fire, the head of the emergency services said.

Police and prosecutors were on site to investigate the causes of the accident and identify the victims.
