Afghan mullahs protest US detentions

JALALABAD, August 6, 2008 (AFP) - About 200 people, mostly Islamic clerics and mullahs, demonstrated here Wednesday to protest the detention of 'innocent people' by US-led forces in eastern Afghanistan, witnesses said.

The men blocked a key road between the eastern town of Jalalabad and the Pakistani border, demanding the release of a cleric detained by US forces over the weekend.

FBI arrests alleged mobster 'Junior' Gotti -- again: reports

NEW YORK, August 5, 2008 (AFP) - FBI agents on Tuesday arrested the alleged former head of New York's infamous Gambino crime family, John 'Junior' Gotti, on murder-related charges, local television reported.

Gotti was seized in suburban Long Island and was due to be arraigned later in Manhattan, WNBC reported.

Kenya police nab two aides of top Qaeda suspect: police

NAIROBI, August 3, 2008 (AFP) - Kenyan police captured two suspected aides to Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, a Comoran Al-Qaeda operative wanted over the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, a senior officer said Sunday.

Mohammed himself narrowly escaped Saturday's raid in the coastal town of Malindi, the anti-terrorism police officer told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Spanish police arrest Al-Qaeda-linked suspect

MADRID, August 1, 2008 (AFP) - Spanish police said Friday that they had arrested a man suspected of links to an Al-Qaeda affiliated group in north Africa.

Kamel Salhi was arrested in the eastern city of Alicante, and police found in his home dozens of fake Spanish work contracts for north African immigrants.

Myanmar's top comedian, sports writer in court

YANGON, August 1, 2008 (AFP) - Myanmar's most famous comedian has appeared in court alongside a popular sports writer and two political activists, but no formal charges were filed against them, a lawyer told AFP Friday.

The four appeared at a secret court inside the notorious Insein prison in the economic hub Yangon, for the first time since their arrests in June.
