20 Haitians drown off Bahamas: Coast Guard

MIAMI, April 21, 2008 (AFP) - The bodies of 20 drowned Haitians were found overnight Sunday, around 25 kilometers (15 miles) off the coast of the Nassau in the Bahamas, the US Coast Guard said Monday.

Three members of the group of 24 people were rescued alive while searchers were continuing to look for one more person, said coastguard spokesman Luis Diaz.

Deadly Hurricane Noel churns north toward Canada

SANTO DOMINGO, Nov 2, 2007 (AFP) - Hurricane Noel on Friday churned over the Atlantic Ocean on a northerly track to Canada after battering the Caribbean where it killed at least 122 people in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

It is expected to slam into Nova Scotia over the weekend still packing powerful winds, but no longer bearing the characteristics of a tropical cyclone.

Britain sends navy ship for Caribbean hurricane relief

LONDON, Nov 2, 2007 (AFP) - Britain has deployed a Royal Navy vessel and helicopters to the Carribean to help with the Hurricane Noel relief operation, Foreign Secretary David Miliband said Friday.

Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Wave Knight -- a fast tanker with helicopter support -- has been sent to the region.

Canada braces for Noel's powerful winds

MONTREAL, Nov 2, 2007 (AFP) - Nova Scotia braced for powerful winds as a storm once named Hurricane Noel churned toward the Canadian province after killing at least 122 people in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

The system, now a strong extratropical cyclone, was expected to slam into Nova Scotia on Saturday and then barrel across the Gulf of St Laurence and through Labrador.

Tropical Storm Noel barrels toward Bahamas

SANTO DOMINGO, Nov 1, 2007 (AFP) - Deadly Tropical Storm Noel barreled toward the Bahamas Thursday and could strengthen into a full-blown hurricane following its rampage through the Caribbean where it killed at least 90 people.

The worst affected by Noel's wrath was the Dominican Republic, where 56 people were confirmed dead and dozens more were reported missing.
