RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct 5, 2008 (AFP) - The shooting deaths of at least seven people and the arrests of 808 others -- including 101 candidates -- marred local elections held Sunday across Brazil that were expected to give a big boost to the country's ruling coalition and President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Man shot trying to enter Brazilian president's residence

BRASILIA, Oct 5, 2008 (AFP) - Guards at the official residence of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Sunday shot and wounded a 30-year-old man who ignored warnings and tried to enter the property, officials said.

The man, who was not carrying identification, was taken to a hospital in the capital Brasilia for medical treatment, the president's security service said.

Brazil sees bumper sugarcane crop for 2008

Sao Paulo airport briefly closed after small plane slips off runway

SAO PAULO, September 3, 2008 (AFP) - Sao Paulo's city-center domestic airport was briefly closed Wednesday after a small corporate plane failed to stop on the runway as it came into land, officials said.
