Bush allows torture: Carter

WASHINGTON, Oct 10, 2007 (AFP) - US President George W. Bush's administration tortures detainees in defiance of international law, former US president Jimmy Carter charged Wednesday.

'I don't think it, I know it, certainly,' Carter told CNN television when asked if he believed the US administration allowed the use of torture.

Carter rejected Bush's statement last week that the United States does not torture terror suspects.

Ex-US president Carter urges Myanmar military to halt crackdown

MIAMI, Sept 28, 2007 (AFP) - Former US president Jimmy Carter on Friday joined a public outcry against the crackdown on protesters in Myanmar, urging the military authorities to halt the violence and release political prisoners.

'The international community collectively calls on the military government immediately to halt the use of violence against its own citizens,' Carter said.

In Venice, Jimmy Carter takes on US media in Demme documentary

VENICE, Italy, Sept 7, 2007 (AFP) - Former US president Jimmy Carter takes on America's mainstream media with a controversial book on the Middle East in a Jonathan Demme documentary that premiered Friday at the Venice film festival.

The documentary portrait 'Man from Plains' follows Carter all over America on his tour late last year to promote the book, provocatively titled 'Palestine: Peace not Apartheid.'
