Kashmir rebel alliance declares three-day Eid truce

SRINAGAR, India, Oct 8, 2007 (AFP) - An alliance of rebel groups fighting Indian rule in Kashmir on Monday declared a three-day truce for the upcoming Eid festival, the biggest holiday on the Muslim calendar at the end of Ramadan.

'The unilateral ceasefire by all the militant groups will come into effect from October 12 and last for three days,' said the United Jihad Council, an alliance of more than a dozen militant groups based in Pakistani Kashmir.

Ethiopian rebels declare truce for UN mission in volatile region

NAIROBI, Sept 2, 2007 (AFP) - Ethiopian rebels declared a ceasefire Sunday to allow a United Nations mission to tour the eastern Ogaden region and assess alleged rights violations and a worsening humanitarian situation.

Three days after the 14-man mission arrived in the area bordering lawless Somalia, the rebels said the truce was designed to assure the team's security during the week-long assignment.
