Hungarian court rejects hate speech amendments

BUDAPEST, June 30, 2008 (AFP) - The Hungarian Constitutional Court said Monday it rejected Socialist-initiated amendments of the country's hate speech bill, calling them unconstitutional.

The amendments would cause the curtailing of freedom of expression, the court said in a statement.

Myanmar enacts new constitution: state TV

Myanmar's new constitution has been 'confirmed and enacted' following a referendum this month, state television said Thursday, reading a statement by junta leader Than Shwe.

'The nationwide referendum confirmed and enacted the constitution of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar,' the statement said.

Greek deputies to get jobs back in constitutional revision

Currently barred by the constitution from practising a profession once elected to parliament, Greek deputies could regain the right in a constitutional revision voted on this week.

The country's parliament on Tuesday night voted to abolish the restriction imposed under a prior constitutional revision in 2001.

A follow-up vote will finalise the change within a month's time.

Turkmen parliament calls for 7-year presidential terms

ASHGABAT, May 23, 2008 (AFP) - The Turkmen parliament on Friday called for the presidential term to be extended from five to seven years as part of a package of constitutional reforms.

Parliament speaker Akdja Nurberdyeva said numerous citizens and lawmakers had appealed for a lengthening of the presidential term 'to enable the head of state to carry out long-term policies.'
