Life in Sudan limbo for Canadian with suspected Qaeda ties

KHARTOUM, August 6, 2008 (AFP) - Abousfian Abdelrazik is angry, broke and wants to go home. But the father-of-four is holed up inside Canada's embassy in Sudan and cannot, banned from flying as an alleged Al-Qaeda affiliate.

'I'm not violent. I'm an ordinary decent guy who wants to go home,' said the 46-year-old Sudanese-Canadian by telephone. 'I just want to be free.'

Five dead, two survivors in Canadian small plane crash

VANCOUVER, August 4, 2008 (AFP) - Five people were dead after a small plane with seven people aboard crashed Sunday in western Canada, public television reported. But two others survived the accident.

The Grumman Goose aircraft disappeared Sunday morning shortly after taking off north of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Rescuers scour western Canada for plane crash survivor

VANCOUVER, August 3, 2008 (AFP) - Rescuers were searching on Sunday for at least one survivor who sent a text message to authorities after a small plane crashed in western Canada with seven people aboard, officials said.

The Grumman Goose aircraft disappeared Sunday morning shortly after taking off, north of Vancouver, British Colombia.

Heavy rains kill two in eastern Canada

MONTREAL, August 3, 2008 (AFP) - Torrential rains in eastern Canada left two dead over the weekend in Quebec province and led to evacuations in New Brunswick, according to reports Sunday.

Environment Canada issued alerts for more heavy rainfall in the eastern region, with the ministry forecasting up to 10 centimeters (four inches) between Sunday and Monday in southern Quebec.

Canadian beheading victim's family asks to grieve in peace

MONTREAL, August 3, 2008 (AFP) - The family of a 22-year-old Canadian man who was beheaded by a fellow passenger inside a bus spoke for the first time on Saturday, urging the media and public to let them grieve in private.

'We are requesting the media and the public for privacy,' said the victim's uncle, Alex McLean. 'We'd like to have time to grieve.'

Canadian police charge 40-year-old man in bus beheading

OTTAWA, August 1, 2008 (AFP) - Police charged a suspect Friday with unpremeditated murder in the horrific stabbing, beheading and gutting of a fellow bus passenger returning home from a carnival in Western Canada.

Vince Weiguang Li, 40, of Edmonton faces a charge of second-degree murder, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced.
